Founded in 2019, Hank & Stella’s is the culmination of a life-long love of ice cream and 20+ years in the restaurant industry. Our co-founder grew up in Vermont, where in the late 1970’s and early 80’s, a friend of his parents was an early board member of a Vermont-based ice cream company that has since gone global. The family’s freezer was always stocked with at least five or six different flavors.
Continuing into college in Granville, Ohio in the 80’s and throughout the next three decades, that desire to own and operate an ice cream shop never faded. Finally in the fall of 2018, while visiting his son at college in St. Louis, an idea started to form. His niece, also in St. Louis, worked for a local custard stand and after visiting it, the light-bulb clicked on.
The fall of 2018 was dedicated to research and tasting as much and as often as possible. In early spring of 2019, a single barrel continuous freezer was purchased and product development had begun. Flavor profiles and samples were sourced from across the U.S and it soon became apparent that we had hit something special.
It is our privilege to serve you some of the best tasting custard in the mid-west. We are proud of our roots and the high quality ingredients used in our local production process. We hope Hank & Stella’s brings the same smile to your face that it does to us every time we take a bite.
